Chapter One

Shay

Two wineglasses are on the coffee table, evidence of a romantic night. I clear them away, rinsing the ruby-colored stains pooling at the bottom of the goblets. The coffee is brewing, filling the galley kitchen with the aroma of the dark roast beans Sean introduced me to when I moved into his Murray Hill apartment eighteen months ago.

I turn my head at the sound of a key in the lock, and a moment later he comes in, stepping out of his flip-flops. He’s humming, like he does when he’s happy. He’s been humming a lot lately.

“Hi there,” I say as he sets down a shopping bag from Whole Foods with a bouquet of purple tulips peeking out of the top. “You’re up early.”

His thick, gingery hair is sticking up a bit in the back, and I suppress the urge to reach out and run my fingers through it.

“Thought I’d pick up breakfast.” He unpacks eggs and croissants and strawberries.

As I reach for the carafe of coffee, Sean’s bedroom door opens.

He quickly gathers the tulips as his girlfriend, Jody, walks into the kitchen.

“Good morning,” she says, stretching. She’s wearing a pair of Sean’s boxers, which are almost covered by one of his big hoodies. Her curly hair is up in a high ponytail, and her toenails are painted bright pink.

Sean gives her the tulips—and a kiss. I quickly turn away, busying myself opening the fridge and pouring almond milk into my travel mug.

“Enjoy breakfast,” I say. “I’m heading out to get some work done.”

“On a Sunday?” Jody crinkles her pert little nose.

“I want to revise my résumé. I have an interview tomorrow.”

Why I love it

I’m nitpicky about psychological thrillers—I like my plot twists surprising, but not outrageous, and finding the perfect balance is rare. You Are Not Alone reveals enough of what’s going on beneath the surface to keep you on the edge of your seat…and then smacks you in the face with the logical, yet unexpected “why” of it all.

I recommend going into You Are Not Alone blind, so I’ll keep these plot details vague. Shay Miller is living a lonely, unremarkable life in New York City when she witnesses a woman jump in front of a subway train. Horrified and intrigued, Shay seeks out the woman’s glamorous friends, who are everything Shay is not. These friends turn out to be interested in Shay too, kicking off a cat-and-mouse game that will keep you guessing who’s pulling the strings.

When I started this book, I was in an epic reading slump (four DNFs in a row!). You Are Not Alone was just the book I needed, hooking me from page one and keeping me engrossed for the next two days. It’s a story about loneliness and the lengths people are willing to go for companionship. And, for once, a thriller where the women are in charge!

I didn’t think I would love this book, but I ended up devouring it in 2 days - loved it! . Some things were predictable, but I enjoyed reading how all the details came together in the end! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • Tiffany V.

I adore a good psychological/thriller with a few shockers and plot twists! Quite a few ‘OMG’ moments, really pulls you in and has you guessing who’s more ‘unhinged’ as it reads from multiple women.

  • Sierra D.

    Winchester, VA

This book only gives just enough info as you’re reading it, so you only have a taste of what’s going on, but it’s just enough to make you want to fall head first down the rabbit hole. Absolutely loved

  • Dawn M.

    Spartanburg, SC

This one I couldn’t put down. At first I thought the title was for those who’d lost a love one and almost didn’t pick it! The characters started to get more interesting with every turn of the page

  • Marge K.

Enjoyed this book and didn’t see the end coming! Needed to reread last few chapters to “wrap my head around “the ending to draw it all together. Evoked different emotions to the strengths of the women
