Why I love it

Siobhan Jones
BOTM Editorial Team

I don’t know if you noticed… but we feature a lot of thrillers around here. It’s a popular genre—in our office and with readers in general—and we feature at least one every month. In other words, you could be a BOTM member going back for years and have ordered nothing from us but books about murder, secrets, and lies.

That said, we generally stick to thrillers of the endangered wife/missing girl/runaway woman variety. We still love those, but this month we’re switching it up in favor of something less personal and more political. Check out this premise: a shadowy deep state organization frames former Secret Service agent Nick Averose for the killing of a state official, prompting a chase across Washington, D.C. To prove his innocence, Nick—with the help of his genius sidekick, Delia—must uncover a sinister plot perpetrated by a bunch of villainous politicians seeking to control the government.

This is the kind of book you read in one sitting because the stakes contained therein feel really high. With an injection of espionage and politics, it’s fast and addictive—and still manages to be full of murder, secrets, and lies!

Synopsis

As a Secret Service agent, Nick Averose spent a decade protecting the most powerful men and women in America and developed a unique gift: the ability to think like an assassin. Now, he uses that skill in a little-known but crucial job. As a “red teamer,” he poses as a threat, testing the security around our highest officials to find vulnerabilities—before our enemies can. He is a mock killer, capable of slipping past even the best defenses.

His latest assignment is to assess the security surrounding the former CIA director at his DC area home. When Nick enters the man’s study, the home’s inner sanctum, he finds the man alone and unconscious. Someone else has been here—someone who attacked the chief and left him for dead, just moments before. Desperately attempting to save the man’s life, he contaminates the crime scene. Now, investigators believe Nick is somehow involved.

Nick knows he’s the perfect scapegoat. But who is framing him, and why? To clear his name, he must find the truth—a search that leads to a nefarious conspiracy whose roots stretch back decades. The prize is the most powerful position in the world: the Oval Office.

To save himself and the people he loves, Nick must stop the men who rule Washington before they bury him along with their secrets.

This is exactly the kind of book I love! Every page had some new detail or tiwst that really kept me hooked. The author’s vocabulary really allowed me to understand Nick’s feelings and actions! ????????

An AMAZING thriller! I took a chance on this book and I’m so glad I did! It had political conspiracy, betrayal, action, and twists at every turn! I couldn’t put it down! Fast read, highly recommend!

  • Strattanville , PA

This book had me on the edge of my seat and wishing I could read faster to see what happened next! There wasn’t a slow moment where I thought I could put it down for the night and not wonder about it.

  • Glendale, AZ

Fast-paced and thrilling from start to finish. What it lacks in description it makes up for in action. It may not be a modern classic, but it’s still a really fun read. I just couldn’t put it down.

  • Cincinnati , OH

I don’t read political thrillers often enough for as much as I love them. I’m glad BOTM branched out with this truly unputdownable race for the truth. It’s cinematic, yet authentic and believable.

  • Morgantown, WV

Quirk’s Hour of the Assassin was a fast-paced thriller that had me on my toes from beginning to end. The hardest part about reading this book was having to put it down. This is a "movie-ready" book.

  • Woodbridge, VA

Hour of the Assassin was such a fun ride. From the get-go, the story thrusts you right into the action and I could not get enough! It was action-packed, fast-paced. I felt like I was watching a movie.

  • Detroit, MI

Loved it as a quick, fun & suspenseful read. Had to roll my eyes a few points (didn't like the damsel approach to the female characters & the protagonist was hyper-masculine and Quirk made that clear)

  • Denver, CO

I could NOT put this book down. It took me all of 4 days to finish. The plot is captivating and thrilling. The short chapters leave you hungry to find out what happens chapter after chapter. Well done

  • Saegertown, PA

I loved how the action started straight from the beginning and how it continued through the whole book. I read it very fast because I could not put it down. I thought Matthew Quirk did a very good job

  • Fortuna, CA

This book held my interest from the first page to the last. I thought it was really good. Wondered what would be next as the story progressed. Page after page it didn't disappoint. Good thriller!

  • Lewisville, TX

Hour of the Assassin is a really interesting, easy-to-read, entertaining, political thriller. It almost reads like a political, espionage TV drama, similar to a more readable Tom Clancy story. There w

  • South Boston, MA

Has you on the edge of your seat from the beginning, got through it in just a few days. I enjoyed the different viewpoints from chapter to chapter so you can see different angles of the same storyline

  • Crozet, VA

Action-packed, interesting, and thought-provoking. It was hard to put this book down, and I have to say that, even when being told from all characters' POV, it still managed to shock me at every turn.

  • Largo, FL

An action-packed read with necessary and surprising twists, but thankfully w/o ‘drama’ that makes you want to stop reading the book forever. Loved this book & the escape from reality it provided.

  • Coraopolis, PA

Fast-paced and super entertaining. I really enjoyed the characters in this one and there was at least one “jaw drop” moment. The middle was a little slow but overall super enjoyable. Four stars!

  • Mount Vernon , OH

This was a really great read! It is your typical DC political scandal where the protagonist is out for the truth while dodging the authorities... because gasp! He was framed for a murder. Great read.

  • Albany , OR

Immediately yanking you into the depths of this fast paced story, your head will spin in without pause until finished. Quirk does a superb job of immediately capturing you in the best possible way.

  • Medina, OH

Started right put the gate woth the intense action and intruige. Some grammar issues here and there but doesnt ruin the story whatsoever, by the end of the book my anxiety was through the roof! ????

  • Westminster, CO

Riveting from the very first page. This book was action packed and really takes the reader on a ride with Nick, who is trying to clear his name for a murder he didn’t commit. Never a dull moment!
