Synopsis

Nahri’s life changed forever the moment she accidentally summoned Dara, a formidable, mysterious djinn, during one of her schemes. Whisked from her home in Cairo, she was thrust into the dazzling royal court of Daevabad—and quickly discovered she would need all her grifter instincts to survive there.

Now, with Daevabad entrenched in the dark aftermath of a devastating battle, Nahri must forge a new path for herself. But even as she embraces her heritage and the power it holds, she knows she’s been trapped in a gilded cage, watched by a king who rules from the throne that once belonged to her family—and one misstep will doom her tribe.

Meanwhile, Ali has been exiled for daring to defy his father. Hunted by assassins, adrift on the unforgiving copper sands of his ancestral land, he is forced to rely on the frightening abilities the marid—the unpredictable water spirits—have gifted him. But in doing so, he threatens to unearth a terrible secret his family has long kept buried.

And as a new century approaches and the djinn gather within Daevabad's towering brass walls for celebrations, a threat brews unseen in the desolate north. It’s a force that would bring a storm of fire straight to the city’s gates ... and one that seeks the aid of a warrior trapped between worlds, torn between a violent duty he can never escape and a peace he fears he will never deserve.

I’ve no words to accurately describe how much I love this book and series. It’s so magical and whimsical with such complex characters and an intriguing plot. Can’t wait for Empire of Gold to come out!

Not your Disney Genie!! Reads like it’s part of “A Thousand and One Nights.” I love the gritty, survivalist protagonist who is the key to all the possible futures. Second in a series of 3, btw.

  • Portland, OR

An exciting follow-up that moved quickly, further developed the complex & original cast of characters and delivered on plot twists and turns. Primary downside: one-dimensional new or secondary chars.

  • San Antonio, TX

I LOVE this series. I have been waiting over a year since the first and this did NOT disappoint. I love how it makes my imagination go wild in this make believe land of Game of Thrones meets Aladdin.

  • Zumbrota, MN

I was eagerly awaiting this sequel & it did not disappoint. The dazzling city of Daevabad is still full of political intrigue, secrets, & hidden dangers & the characters are ones that stick with you!

Obsessed with this. Still thinking about this book’s world and it’s characters more than 6 months later. Can’t wait until the next installation in this series comes out in a few months! 10/10

Another extraordinary adventure that I wasn’t quite ready to leave. Chakraborty really knows how to transport a reader into faraway places of magic, love, betrayal, and anguish! Highly recommend!

Blown away, yet again, by S.A. Chakraborty's beautiful story telling, vibrant characters and out of this world description of a world made from her own imagination. Can't wait for the third book!

  • Mellette, SD

This series is set in an amazingly detailed world that really makes you think about loyalty, class, and how a society can or can’t improve if it doesn’t address those things.

  • Encinitas, CA

Chakraborty ramped up her series with this thrilling follow up to City of Brass. Amazing characters, agonizing tension, an unbelievably gripping final act. THIS SERIES IS THE BEST.
